In Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing extends to centers Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient for testing. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for this over the usual urine test. Hair tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and those on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection period for drugs, up to 90 days, and it’s nearly impossible to circumvent. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the superior choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can indicate drug and alcohol use over up to a 3-month period. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The process for analyzing a drug test result in the lab involves four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into a lab’s system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data that isn’t provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drug abuse substances. While Screening economically excludes drug use for most samples, any sample with a positive screen must be validated to be accepted in court. Any samples with a preliminary positive result in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this process, drugs are drawn from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection scope.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is next to impossible, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over months rather than just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even when called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
