Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Tulsa, Oklahoma. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing excels in the field of hair testing. We have facilities spread across the nation capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is optimal. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Lately, the use of hair follicle drug tests has grown in drug testing procedures. Many employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. This method suits employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals. A key advantage is its prolonged detection window, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting recent usage within 5 days, the urine test still reigns as the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair exams have emerged as an essential approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a detailed record of alcohol and drug intake by holding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month history for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch portion from roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to measure the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't present, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' specifically means scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step of recording a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for negating drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be acceptable in court. Any samples testing positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial portion and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening remains the most intricate method to execute.

Affirmation of any positive result in Screening is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can spot drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronicles historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
