Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Tucker, Oklahoma. For those in need of a hair substance screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, with facilities located in cities across the nation able to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body can be used. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate specific testing needs.

More recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for screening purposes. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts often favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. These tests offer an extended detection window for drug consumption, lasting up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and offer a high level of accuracy. However, urine tests remain the best option for detecting substance use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair serves as a repository for drug and alcohol markers, encapsulating them within the strands as they grow. When hair samples are collected from near the scalp, they can reveal drug or alcohol consumption over a span of roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to send for analysis.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, comprising around 200 strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil in thickness) taken from near the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is considered optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, added tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent volume of body hair can be obtained. When we refer to head hair, it is exclusively in reference to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test in a laboratory involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial integration into the laboratory's system. This process includes ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry required beyond the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial brief examination for substances of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, though any positive screens must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If results in the Screening stage indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction stage. During this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening procedures.

The Confirmation process for any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples identified as presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. Each stage from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection interval: Hair drug tests offer detection potential for drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to falsification: The difficulty of tampering with a hair drug test enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Historic usage insight: Provides an overview of drug usage patterns over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strands rather than the follicles beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
