Accredited Drug Testing offers hair follicle drug assessments right in South Central Pontotoc, Oklahoma. If a hair or alcohol analysis is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing is your hair testing expert, with facilities available in every city across the country ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be employed for sampling. Analyses include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing.

Over the years, drug testing procedures have increasingly shifted toward hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation primarily use these tests. The outstanding advantage is a 90-day detection span, with an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof, though urine tests remain best for detecting recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can deliver a detection timeframe of up to around 90 days for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample that is 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process entails verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient solution to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for courtroom admissibility. Any samples that appear positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and under ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter duration.
  • Hard to tamper: Hair drug tests are very challenging to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical analysis: It helps track drug usage patterns over time, rather than just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
