In Shawnee, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Should you require hair drug or alcohol screenings, our focus on hair analyses is supported by nationwide facilities capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is essential, allowing examination for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made hair testing alternatives.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent in recent years for substance assessment. Many businesses, legal entities, and addiction experts now favor hair analysis over simple urine tests. These tests are advantageous to employers with strict no-drug policies and legal agencies. They offer a longer detection range, up to 90 days, using monitored collection for accuracy and difficult to deceive. Despite this, urine tests remain optimal for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust tool for monitoring drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by locking biomarkers in the growth fibers of hair strands. Samples cut near the scalp can trace substances up to roughly 3 months prior. Collection is straightforward, it's relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A segment of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's best to weigh specimens on a jeweler's scale. If head hair can't be obtained, corresponding body hair may be used. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair exclusively. "Body hair" covers other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a lab drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's entry into a lab system, verifying seal integrity, proper shipment, assigning an LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any missing information not captured by an electronic custody protocol.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though a cost-efficient means to negate drug usage for most samples, court submission requires positive screens to undergo confirmation. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening must receive a follow-up confirmation.

Presumptively positive samples in Screening are supplemented with additional hair from the original sample and readied for Extraction, a phase where drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations relative to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair screening notably complex.

Positive screening confirmations are executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are pre-washed for confirmation per necessity. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is very difficult to cheat a hair drug test, making the results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It can provide a pattern of drug use over a period of time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
