Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Luther, Oklahoma. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with testing centers spread nationwide, ready to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is required. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is chosen by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers. A key advantage of a hair follicle test is the extended detection window of up to 90 days. It involves an observed collection method and is extremely difficult to cheat, although urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures long-term records of these substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol consumption within roughly a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (akin to a #2 pencil in size) from the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which serves as the ideal amount for initial screening and confirmation tests. For testing involving EtG, additional parameters, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen's weight. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, an equal amount of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning step begins with incorporating the sample into the lab's system. This step includes checking the integrity of the sample's seal and shipping conditions, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry that isn’t available through an electronic chain of custody.

The Screening phase involves an initial assessment to check for drug substances. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. All presumptive positives found in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair from the same sample is used for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than other tests like urine or oral fluid, contributing to hair drug testing being a challenging methodology.

Any positive results from screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Each presumptive positive is washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under guidelines set by CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long-term detection: Hair drug testing can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: The accuracy of hair drug testing is high due to the difficulty in tampering with the sample.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over an elongated period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes between 5 to 7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Luther, OK, offer several advantages over conventional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
