Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Grove, Oklahoma. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments. We boast testing facilities in all cities across the nation capable of conducting these analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair evaluations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, the incorporation of hair follicle assessments has become more prevalent in drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair analyses over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by establishments with strict anti-drug policies, legal courts, and probationers. Among the chief advantages is the extended detection span, up to 90 days, along with an observed collection process that's nearly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for recent drug usage, the urine test remains the superior choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the head, hair can provide as much as a 3-month retrospective window for detecting alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and conveniently transportable.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments above 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When specifying head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab analysis of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a specimen into the lab’s workflow. This procedure involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data requirements not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes an initial swift evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exonerate drug consumption in most cases, a positive finding necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug screening’s complexity relative to other testing methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive outcomes from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples undergo a cleansing process prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: A hair drug test is quite difficult to deceive, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Establishes historical use: It can illustrate a trend of drug consumption over time, not just recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Attributes such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth may impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
