Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Claremore, Oklahoma. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and operate centers across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have gained prevalence as a preferred method for drug screening. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies and by courts for individuals on probation. The chief advantage of hair tests is their extended detection range, up to 90 days, which is collected during an observed process and is nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the accurate choice for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests like EtG add-ons or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's best to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair. In contrast, 'body hair' includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process in drug test analysis involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a specimen into the lab's system. This step involves confirming the specimen's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court validity. Samples that are presumptively positive post-Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial collection and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at much lower concentrations relative to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Positive Screen results move to Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample is washed before Confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing reveals drug use up to 90 days old, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Tamper resistant: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks usage history: Offers a record of drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
