Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Boley, Oklahoma. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol tests, we boast numerous testing centers across the nation for your convenience. To conduct a test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is generally requisite. These tests can assess drug or alcohol/ETG presence or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained traction over traditional methods. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer it to urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, probation checks, and court orders, this method detects drug use over extended periods, typically up to 90 days. Its observed collection minimizes cheating. However, recent usage detection, within 5 days, is still best with urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strands. When gathered near the scalp, it can represent up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is ideal. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails incorporating the sample into the lab’s system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening serves as an initial evaluation for drug abuse. Although cost-efficient in eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to hold up in court. Presumptive positives in Screening must undergo subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample screen positive, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at lower concentrations from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as the most intricate process to execute.

Any positive screening outcome undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can unveil drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with shorter periods seen in urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair testing is hard to deceive, rendering results more reliable.
  • Historical usage insight: Offers a usage pattern over time rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair testing is generally pricier than other methods.
  • Results variability: Factors such as hair color and growth differences may affect metabolite concentration.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
