Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wauseon, Ohio. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair analysis is available nationwide, including specialized testing centers in every city. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many companies, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. They are ideal for employers with strict drug-use policies, court-mandated cases, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended 90-day detection window and their near-impossibility to falsify, although urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, allowing for a long-term review of alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair close to the scalp can offer an alcohol and drug detection window of approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, considered ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding ten panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. Scalp hair refers exclusively to head hair, while body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning step where a sample is entered into a lab’s system. This phase involves ensuring the sample was securely sealed, accurately shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening functions as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it’s an economical way to rule out drug consumption across most samples, any positive screening must be validated for court admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For any sample presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are derived from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making it the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results employs techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of presumptive positive samples occurs before confirmation. The entire laboratory protocol, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for a duration of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty of evading a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: Hair drug tests can present a timeline of drug use rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become identifiable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than other drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth disparities may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
