In Warren, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis. If a hair drug or alcohol exam is required, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert with facilities in cities across the nation capable of executing such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is used. These tests can scrutinize drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

The rising preference for hair follicle drug examinations in recent times has led many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals to favor them over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationers increasingly rely on hair tests due to their extensive drug use detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making deception extremely difficult. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal up to a three-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to adulterate, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it is specified as scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample registers as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Harder to manipulate: Cheating during a hair drug test is highly challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Displays historical usage: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Does not detect recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing strategies.
  • Results can vary: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Testing Vs. Urine Tests in Warren, OH: Hair follicle tests surpass urine tests by offering a longer detection window and greater reliability. The comprehensive nature of hair testing ensures a broader insight into an individual's substance use history, reducing the potential for false negatives. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
