Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in St. Henry, Ohio. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise lies in hair testing, with testing centers available across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for the hair test. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other customized hair testing options.

Lately, the trend for drug testing has increasingly turned to hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals frequently prefer a hair drug test over a traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with stringent no-drug-use policies, courts, and probationaries. Notably, hair follicle drug tests offer an extended detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection, rendering it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands capture a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within their fibers. When taken from near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection timeframe for up to around three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Obtaining hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of nearly 200 hair strands (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will provide approximately 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. In relation to head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages within the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This phase includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input that an electronic chain of custody system may not have supplied.

The Screening phase involves a preliminary, rapid check for substances of abuse. Despite being a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use for most samples, any screen showing a positive result must be verified to hold up in court. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample displays a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted following the regulations of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests come with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage across a period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
