Process Overview
There are four primary phases in processing a drug test result in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

For samples presumed positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.
Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete lab process, covering Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.
