Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Norwich, Ohio. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is dedicated to hair analysis, with testing centers existing in cities across the nation to conduct these tests. Generally, you will require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body. Hair examinations are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing in drug screening processes has risen. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts mandate hair tests over traditional urine tests. This test is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation. The significant advantage lies in its prolonged drug detection span of up to 90 days, with an observed collection method making any cheating attempts nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting recent substance use within 5 days, urinalysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection range of up to 3 months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for examination and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing within a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial scan for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out substance use in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If Screening yields a tentative positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a highly challenging process.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: Hair testing can delineate a timeline of substance use, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days post-ingestion to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
