Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Gahanna, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body suffice for testing. Hair analysis can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific purposes.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prominent in drug screening methods. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer them over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair captures a long-term record of substance use. When the hair is taken from near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month period of alcohol and drug detection. Hair samples are easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately pencil width) next to the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG expansions and tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifies scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

Four essential phases make up the lab process for drug testing results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with incorporating the sample into the lab's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any extra data not included in an electronic custody record.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though efficient and cost-effective for a broad yet initial analysis, any positive outcomes must undergo confirmation for court validity. Positive indications from Screening demand further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair testing particularly complex.

Confirmation of positive screens is executed via technologies such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples marked as presumptive positives are appropriately washed before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the process is meticulously reviewed to meet both the CAP Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can monitor drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Cheating difficulty: Hair tests are tough to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: These tests offer a comprehensive usage timeline beyond recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become evident in hair typically 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher costs: Hair tests usually incur greater expense than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth rates can influence metabolite amounts.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates hair strands, not follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
