Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fremont, Ohio. Whether you're in need of a test for alcohol or drugs, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with nationwide facilities ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Our hair tests are adept at analyzing substances such as drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method of substance testing. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. Such tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation officers. The extended detection period of up to 90 days is a significant advantage, with collection under supervision ensuring accuracy and defeating potential tampering. However, for the most precise results on recent (within five days) drug usage, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use. It offers an extended timeframe of alcohol and drug history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reflect alcohol and drug use over roughly a three-month period. The collection process is straightforward, the sample is hard to tamper with, and shipping is convenient.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is optimal for initial screening and confirmatory tests. In cases involving EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of hair is desirable. It is advisable to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, this pertains solely to the scalp. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of analyzing a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial integration of the sample into the lab system. This procedure verifies the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a primary scan for illicit substances. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples flagged during Screening require further confirmation.

For samples flagged in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration compared to methods such as urine or oral fluids, contributing to hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washes before confirmation. The laboratory steps from Accessioning to Confirmation are scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can monitor drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: They reveal drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher expenses than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Attributes such as hair color and growth variability can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
