Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening available in Fairlawn, Ohio. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair screening, with testing centers in all cities across the country ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals utilize hair tests primarily for their extended detection capability—up to 90 days—and their resistance to tampering. However, for detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline for detecting alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use for roughly a 3-month timeframe. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

An optimal screening and confirmation sample is derived from a 1.5-inch length consisting of around 200 hair strands, comparable to the width of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp to yield 100mg of hair. For tests involving EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample's weight. In instances where scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any necessary additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial quick assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen needs verification to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positives in the Screening phase need a subsequent confirmation.

For presumptive positive samples in Screening, a larger portion of the initial sample is extracted for further preparation in Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening results proceed to Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP Hair (College of American Pathologists) designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug activity up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, improving result accuracy.
  • Provides chronological data: It furnishes a trajectory of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to be observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strands rather than the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
