In Bryan, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialized centers are located in every city across the nation, ready to perform hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing protocols. Employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies and probation mandates, hair tests offer up to a 90-day detection window, are supervised during collection, and are exceptionally hard to manipulate. Still, urine tests are favored for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by embedding markers in the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair offers about a 3-month detection period for substances and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, less likely to be tampered with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary procedures in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any supplementary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening executes an initial rapid evaluation for substances of misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates validation to be valid in court. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. During Extraction, substances are extracted from hair at a substantially reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug screening is a challenging methodology to execute.

Validation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and certified as per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which has a limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is challenging, which ensures more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It reveals patterns of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug testing often incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle to urine testing in Bryan, OH, the hair test stands out. Hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy, ensuring results are credible. They provide a broader detection window and are resilient against attempts to tamper, making them a preferred choice for strict policies or critical evaluations.

This gives employers a detailed look at an individual's substance habits, providing more comprehensive insights compared to traditional methods, and aiding in informed decision-making processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
