Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Athens, Ohio. Specializing in hair tests, our centers across cities Nationwide administer these tests efficiently. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body hair is required. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly prioritize hair follicle testing. Employers with zero-drug tolerance, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests offer an extended detection window, up to 90 days, are conducted under supervised conditions, and are highly tamper-resistant. However, urine tests maintain their accuracy in detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The evaluation of hair has emerged as an effective means for uncovering the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can furnish up to roughly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter fraudulently, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for analysis. For EtG tests, additional details, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all alternative hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This process includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse substances. While Screening is an affordable method to eliminate drug use for the majority of samples, a favorable result from Screening must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prep for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid); thus, hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as appropriate. The complete lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical insight: The test can trace drug usage trends over an extended timeline, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other methodologies.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite being colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Athens, OH, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by providing superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer a broader detection window, capturing drug use history over 90 days. This longer frame is invaluable to employers seeking thorough insights into an individual's substance use, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Athens, OH benefit from hair follicle testing's extended detection window. With a capability to trace substance use over three months, these tests offer a comprehensive understanding of an individual's history, building a detailed profile often unavailable through shorter-span tests like urine samples.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Athens, OH stands as a tamper-resistant method of substance detection. By significantly reducing the potential for sample adulteration, it delivers reliable findings. This robustness provides employers and institutions the reassurance needed to rely on unquestionable results, critical for maintaining standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
