Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ashville, Ohio. For those needing drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers available nationwide, including Ashville, to conduct such tests. Ideally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is necessary for evaluation. Our hair tests encompass drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a standard method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for this over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug use policies, along with judicial and probationary programs, favor hair tests due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days, plus the supervised collection process almost entirely preventing tampering. However, urine tests remain highly effective for detecting very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture long-term histories of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is easy, harder to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. We propose weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable volume of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing for a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within the laboratory’s framework. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry beyond what an electronic chain of custody system offers.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample return presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening remains the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceptionally challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over an interval, beyond recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Ashville, the former offers obvious advantages. Hair testing provides superior detection over extended periods, making it more effective for chronic drug use evaluation.

While traditional urine tests focus on short-term detection, hair tests demonstrate higher accuracy and reliability, granting a more comprehensive insight into substance history and eliminating false negatives often associated with urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

An outstanding benefit of hair follicle testing in Ashville is its extended detection window, tracking drug usage up to 90 days. This long-term insight grants employers an opportunity to understand an individual's drug history fully.

Providing a broader perspective on substance habits, hair testing helps companies make informed decisions about potential hires or existing employees by revealing any drug use patterns over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing safeguards against data manipulation. In Ashville, this testing method ensures reliable results by preventing sample adulteration.

This unparalleled reliability stems from the difficulty in altering hair samples, which makes the outcomes of such tests credible and unquestionable, enhancing trust in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
