Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Garrison, North Dakota. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in this testing method, with facilities across all major cities in the Nationwide network capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head crown or body is necessary. Hair analysis can be performed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific criteria.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are now more likely to opt for this over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by organizations with stringent drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary supervision. One of the main advantages of hair tests is their extended detection period, often up to 90 days, alongside an observed collection process, which makes tampering almost impossible. However, for drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within its growing strands. Collected near the scalp, hair can yield a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and assessments above 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair only, as body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is incorporated into a lab's database. This process confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for illicit drugs. While it's a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs validation to be court-admissible. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the specimen for further preparation in the Extraction phase. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive from Screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete lab process is reviewed for compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to tamper: Hair testing is difficult to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical usage: It indicates a usage pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
