Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Sunbury, North Carolina. For those needing hair or alcohol tests, they specialize in hair analysis with nationwide centers equipped for testing. A sample typically requires 1.5-2 inches of hair, whether from the head or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle tests have grown increasingly popular for drug screening in recent years. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now favor hair tests over traditional urine ones. This form of testing is particularly sought by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the courts, and those on probation. Its main advantage lies in a longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, almost impossible to falsify. However, for drug usage detected within the past five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it offers a detection period of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

An ideal sample for analysis and verification—consisting of a 1.5-inch piece of around 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness)—yields 100mg of hair. For EtG assessments, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in lab analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial sample processing into the lab’s system. This phase ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial rapid drug of abuse detection. While cost-effective for excluding drug use on the majority of samples, a positive screen needs court-admissible confirmation. Samples that test positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair in substantially lower concentrations than that in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a complex methodology.

Confirmation of each positive screen is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete lab process is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and per ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, bolstering result reliability.
  • Reveals historical usage: It shows a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs generally become detectable in hair 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests often incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sunbury, NC, hair follicle testing is quickly becoming a superior choice over traditional urine tests. This method offers more accurate and dependable detection of drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
