Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sanford, North Carolina. For those in need of testing for drugs or alcohol, we offer specialized hair testing solutions and have facilities in cities across the nation available to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction management experts are now opting for hair tests instead of the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are popular among employers enforcing strict no-drug-use standards, court systems, and probationary programs. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, offering a 90-day drug use history, with samples collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to falsify results. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the best option for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair provides a long-term record of drug and alcohol use. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the sample is challenging to tamper with, and it is easy to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within the laboratory system. This phase entails ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly method for excluding drug use in most samples; however, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with presumptively positive Screening results necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If Screening reveals a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is notably challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historic use data: This method provides a usage pattern over time and not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Opt for Hair Follicle Testing Over Urine Testing in Sanford, NC? Hair follicle tests boast advantages such as superior detection accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests primarily detect recent drug use, hair testing offers a broader detection window of up to 90 days. This allows for a more detailed understanding of an individual's long-term drug use, making it the preferred choice for many industries and organizations seeking thorough results.

Extended Detection Window

The Extended Detection Window of hair follicle testing in Sanford, NC, offers a considerable advantage. This method allows for the identification of drug use up to three months prior, providing employers with a thorough glimpse into an individual's drug use history. Hair testing grants a more complete understanding, assisting organizations in making informed decisions based on a comprehensive view of an applicant or employee's substance use patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Sanford, NC, emerges as a Tamper-Resistant Testing Solution. Its sample collection is nearly immune to manipulation, reducing the risk of adulteration. Unlike urine tests that can be tampered with, hair tests offer results that are trustworthy and indisputable, ensuring that the data collected is a true reflection of the subject's substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
