Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Roper, North Carolina. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol through hair analysis, our expertise is unmatched, with testing centers in every city nationwide ready to administer the test. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available on the crown or elsewhere on your body. Hair analyses can reveal drug use, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, the practice of drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle tests. This method, favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, is now preferred over conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation frequently utilize it. Main advantages include a much longer detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, with a closely monitored collection process, making it nearly impossible to deceive. However, if drug usage in the last 5 days needs assessment, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a lengthy history of substances in its structure by integrating biomarkers into its strands. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month evidence period for alcohol and drugs. It's simple to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If head hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair imply scalp hair solely, whereas body hair encompasses other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab processing of a test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab’s database. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing missing data entry if the electronic system didn't cover it.

Screening performs an initial general assessment for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most cases, positive screenings must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive results from Screening need secondary validation.

When a Screening results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs in this step are separated from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting hair drug screening as the most challenging technique.

Verification of any positive screening entails GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are thoroughly cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can detect usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine assays which have a shorter period.
  • Hard to circumvent: Hair drug analysis is complicated to cheat, enhancing test accuracy.
  • Offers past usage data: It reveals a pattern of usage over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
