At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Mooresboro, NC. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all U.S. cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is used. Hair testing provides results for drugs, alcohol/ETG or other tailored hair analysis options.

Lately, the hair follicle drug test method has been more commonly implemented. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists prefer hair drug screening over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by strict employers, judicial systems, and probationers. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended drug use detection period up to 90 days, are securely collected, and are nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month period of alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's circumference) closest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, the optimum quantity for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG detection, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a total of 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (including facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The process for analyzing a drug test result in the laboratory consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where a sample is entered into a lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample packaging and shipping were done correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not captured by an electronic record system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, samples with positive results necessitate confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Samples that show positive results in Screening need further verification.

For samples that seem positive after Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drug compounds are extracted from hair at noticeably lower levels than seen in other testing techniques (such as urine or saliva), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Any sample that tests positive in Screening proceeds to Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a positive indication are cleaned prior to Confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to standards set by CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited under ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, lending greater reliability to the results.
  • Chronological data provision: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over time, instead of merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
