Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mayodan, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, having centers across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug screening. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer these tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug screenings are employed by employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The major advantage is an extended detection period of up to 90 days, monitored in a supervised collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair provides a comprehensive overview of alcohol and other drug usage over time. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window that extends to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp contributes 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirming tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advised. Where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Other types of hair (facial, axillary, among others) are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample upon its introduction into a laboratory system. This stage ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocates a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid test for potential drugs of abuse. Though a cost-effective strategy to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive Screen results necessitate confirmation for court admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive require further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair goes through preparation for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any screening process yielding a positive result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, samples that were previously deemed presumptive positive undergo necessary washing. The entirety of the laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use within a span of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It poses a substantial challenge to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It presents a record of drug consumption over a duration, rather than merely documenting recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes between 5-7 days before drugs become traceable within the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests commonly incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Conditions such as hair color and individual hair growth differences might impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
