Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lillington, North Carolina. For those in need of hair-based drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available across all cities in the U.S. Prerequisites include having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp; body hair may also be deemed suitable. Hair analysis can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific testing requirements.

Of late, hair follicle testing has gained prevalence as the preferred drug testing method. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analyses over traditional urine tests. This shift is largely due to the stringent drug-free policies of employers, courts, and probationary mandates. The key advantage of this method is its long detection window, tracking drug use for up to 90 days, and is monitored during collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting recent substance usage within five days, urine tests remain paramount.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an influential mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol usage and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently shipped.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to assess the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all alternative hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening is an initial rapid examination for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally credible. Samples with preliminary positive results during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample yields a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timespan.
  • Challenge to manipulate results: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It presents a timeline of drug utilization over an extended duration rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: A delay of approximately 5-7 days occurs before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While customarily called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Lillington, NC, surpasses urine testing with its detection accuracy and reliability. The intricate analysis of hair samples reveals an extensive timeline of drug usage, unlike the limited detection span of urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
