Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lenoir, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, with numerous testing centers nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Hair analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probation officers. A significant advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extensive detection window, up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for determining drug use within the past five days, urine tests still offer superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have become recognized as an effective means to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers a prolonged timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair's developing fibers. When taken from a position near the scalp, hair can allow for nearly a 90-day detection scope for alcohol and other substances. Hair samples are easy to collect, quite challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will supply 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for initial testing and verification. For EtG add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we mean only the scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial handling into a lab’s system. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid check for illicit substances. Though Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be verified to be considered acceptable in a court setting. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is removed from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from the hair at concentrations much lower than those in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing a complex methodology to carry out.

Verification of any positive Screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo cleaning before final verification as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are often more costly compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
