Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right in Jacksonville, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, and our centers span across cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, though body hair can often be used. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing techniques have increasingly leaned toward hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are now opting for hair tests as opposed to traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation frequently utilize hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage of using a hair follicle test is its extended detection timeframe for drug usage, often up to 90 days, performed under observation, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It records a long-term history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of hair strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and substances. Gathering hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg, ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, equivalent body hair can be an alternative. Reference to head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing drug test outcomes include four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of sample processing in a lab system. It ensures the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid check for substance misuse. Although Screening cost-effectively excludes drug usage in most samples, confirmed positivity is required for judicial acceptability. Any samples testing presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than seen in other methods like urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug screening particularly complex.

Confirmation of screening positives uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair identification and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Enables drug detection for up to 90 days, a longer period than urine testing.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, increasing the reliability of results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a timeline of substance use beyond mere recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drug detection in hair requires around 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher expenses compared to alternative methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Jacksonville, NC, hair follicle testing triumphs over traditional urine testing in various aspects. Hair tests boast a longer detection period, uncovering drug use patterns over a broader timeframe. While a urine test may catch recent consumption, hair testing offers a detailed history up to 90 days.

Unlike urine testing, hair follicle tests are less susceptible to adulteration. The integrity of the sample remains intact from collection to results. This superior reliability makes hair testing a preferred alternative for employers and institutions enforcing strict anti-drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

One of the prime advantages of hair follicle testing in Jacksonville, NC is its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a thorough insight into an individual’s substance use history, far beyond what urine tests can offer.

With this extended detection window, organizations can make more informed decisions regarding hiring and retaining employees. It provides a comprehensive view of behavioral patterns related to drug use, ensuring workplace safety and compliance with drug-free policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The inherent nature of hair follicle testing makes it a tamper-resistant method in Jacksonville, NC, reducing risks associated with sample adulteration. The sample collection process is directly observed, minimizing chances for manipulation.

With hair's long-term memory capability, attempts to alter or substitute samples go undetected. Consequently, hair testing provides reliable and unquestionable results, securing trust in the results accuracy and maintaining the integrity of drug testing procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
