Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Huntersville, North Carolina. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has you covered with specialized hair testing services and testing centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, you need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown or body for the test. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method for drug testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests. Employers who maintain zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary programs frequently use this method. The most significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, which typically covers up to 90 days. The test uses an observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, when it comes to detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded for its effectiveness in uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance exposure, capturing biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. Hair samples taken near the scalp can cover up to a 3-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, and tampering with it is relatively challenging, plus it is convenient to send.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil), yields around 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent volume of body hair is an acceptable alternative. When we mention head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This step encompasses confirming that the sample was properly sealed and mailed, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any leftover data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be lawful in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a corroborative confirmation step.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is taken for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much more diluted than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which possess a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to evade: Evading a hair drug test is significantly challenging, thus yielding more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over a time span, not solely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of recent detection: It generally requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
