Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Greensboro, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing with centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening in recent years. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probations commonly utilize hair tests. The major advantage is their ability to detect drug use over a longer period—up to 90 days—and their resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extensive history of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not present, the same volume of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This process verifies the sample's secure sealing and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening returns a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening result is completed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing before verification if required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Verification is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug assessments can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, increasing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: It supplies a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become recognizable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually assesses the hair shaft and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Greensboro, NC, hair follicle testing offers superior advantages over traditional urine tests. With greater detection accuracy and reliability, hair tests capture a broader historical perspective of substance use. Unlike urine tests, which have a limited timeframe of detection, hair follicle testing monitors drug use over an extended period, providing transparency and clarity. This comprehensive detection capability reinforces its effectiveness.

Extended Detection Window

Offering a detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Greensboro, NC, is pivotal for employers seeking a detailed account of potential drug use. By analyzing a longer period of substance history, businesses obtain an encompassing view of an individual's habits. This extended window allows employers to make well-informed hiring decisions, fostering a safer and more responsible workforce across the board.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Greensboro, NC, hair follicle tests present a nearly tamper-proof solution for drug testing needs. The process of obtaining a sample from hair drastically reduces the risk of adulteration compared to other testing methods. This inherent resistance to tampering ensures the results are both trustworthy and credible, offering peace of mind to employers and institutions relying on these results for critical decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
