Accredited Drug Testing offers in-depth hair follicle drug testing in Clemmons, North Carolina. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair analysis. We have centers across the country capable of administering hair tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, whether from the head or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

More recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often prefer hair drug testing over urine samples. Hair follicle exams are chosen by organizations with zero-tolerance to drugs, legal authorities, and those on probation. Their key advantage lies in their extended detection window—up to 90 days—and their resistance to tampering, though for recent drug consumption within 5 days, urine tests remain a better option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal substance exposure over a roughly three-month duration. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of nearly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both screening and subsequent confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair might be taken. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation consist of the principal stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome.

Accessioning is the introductory phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it cost-effectively eliminates drug use in most samples, any positive screening result needs confirmation for admissibility in legal contexts. Presumptive positive samples from the Screening phase demand a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positive results in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is exceptionally challenging to conduct.

Confirming any presumptive positive results occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection scope of urine testing.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological usage data: It furnishes a pattern of substance use across a duration, not merely recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
