Located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our facility provides specialized hair testing through numerous centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Various employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals rely on them, with the primary advantage being a detection period reaching 90 days, collected under observation, and almost impossible to cheat. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands document an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers into their fibers during growth. When sampling near the scalp, hair can yield a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to obtain, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

Collecting a 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will furnish 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for assessment and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We propose using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If hair from the scalp is lacking, a corresponding amount of body hair may be obtained. When we refer to head hair, it is specifically about scalp hair. Body hair pertains to other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in processing a drug test result within a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive initial test needs validation to be legally acceptable. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a preliminary positive result in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in substantially lower concentrations compared to other systems (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis one of the most complex strategies to undertake.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive outcomes are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The laboratory’s entire process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Merits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug presence up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy of outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can depict a trajectory of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Chapel Hill, NC offers a superior alternative to traditional urine tests. Compared to urine tests, hair tests provide a more reliable detection method. Hair samples can trace substance use back up to 90 days, surpassing the short detection window of urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
