Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Aurora, North Carolina. If you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, they specialize in this testing with centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has grown increasingly popular in recent times. It's being chosen over urine tests by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation mandates prefer it. The main advantage is a longer detection window, typically 90 days, with observed sampling, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain superior for recent drug use detection, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A minimum 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional parameters, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jewelry scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent weight of body hair can be gathered. In discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering the sample into the laboratory's system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any additional data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, the sample undergoes an initial assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive Screenings require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial specimen is prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from the hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents a greater challenge.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is verified under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
