Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Archdale, North Carolina. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, this highly specialized service is available at testing centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

Recently, the hair follicle method has become more popular for drug testing. Many organizations, including employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are often chosen by employers with strict drug policies as they detect usage over a longer period, usually up to 90 days, and cannot be easily tampered with. However, for detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, it can reflect up to a three-month timeline of alcohol and substance intake. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) clipped near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG testing, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In the laboratory processing sequence of a drug test, four primary stages are involved: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary intake of the sample into the lab's system. This step checks the sample’s seal and shipping conditions, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes other required data entry that might be missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment to check for the presence of drugs. Although it’s a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples indicating a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should the sample show indications of a positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the collected specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to administer.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing step before confirmation as necessary. The entire workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug testing is challenging to circumvent, thus providing more reliable results.
  • History of use: Offers insights into patterns of drug use over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection of recent use: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the examination evaluates the hair strand itself, rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Archdale, NC, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over urine tests. A key benefit of hair testing is its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Urine tests, while traditional, fail to match hair testing's ability to provide insights into longer-term substance use, ensuring informed decisions are made based on comprehensive data.

Extended Detection Window

One of the defining features of hair follicle testing in Archdale, NC, is its extended detection window. This method captures drug use history up to 90 days prior, offering a thorough view of a person's substance habits. Employers gain a detailed understanding of potential hires or current employees, supporting informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
