Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Warwick, New York. Should you require hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in such tests with facilities in every city across the Nation ready to perform them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other parts of the body can be used. Hair tests are analyzable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing increasingly includes hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts demand hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation individuals. The key advantage is a significantly extended detection window up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and difficult to deceive. Nevertheless, when assessing drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a significant instrument in detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of drug and alcohol usage by immobilizing biomarkers within its fiber strands as they develop. When sourced near the scalp, hair can provide an approximately 3-month window of detection for drugs and alcohol use. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement of the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's database. This involves ensuring the sample has been correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary and rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means to negate drug use for most samples, any positive findings in Screening must undergo Confirmation to be legally recognized. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prep for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underscores why hair drug screening represents the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive result from Screening uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. Samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before Confirmation as needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can determine drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Testing resilience: It's notably difficult to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronicles usage history: It reflects a pattern of drug use over an extended duration rather than recent activity alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair typically occurs about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Warwick, NY, the former demonstrates superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer an unrivaled ability to detect longer-term substance use, providing a more comprehensive overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
