Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Tonawanda, New York. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair testing, with facilities in cities nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Hair tests are suitable for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other hair testing requirements.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in drug testing methodologies. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are favored for zero-tolerance policies, probationary individuals, and legal requirements. The chief advantage of hair follicle drug testing lies in its extended detection period, often reaching up to 90 days, accompanied by a monitored collection process and high resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use in the immediate past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of the growing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, special requests, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not facilitated by an electronic custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substances. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be validated in legal proceedings. Samples presumed positive in Screening demand follow-up confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive outcome, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower amounts than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: It is extremely hard to circumvent a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Provides trend analysis: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: There is a 5-7 day lag before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
