Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Sidney, New York. If you’re in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available across all U.S. cities to accommodate your testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers customized testing options.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts advocate for this type of testing over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers who enforce strict no-drug-use policies, judicial authorities, and probationary programs. The key advantage is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, coupled with direct collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now widely recognized as an effective method for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. A record of drug and alcohol intake can be determined for several months by capturing biomarkers in the structure of the hair as it grows. Hair samples taken near the scalp can reveal patterns of usage for up to around 90 days. Collection of hair is straightforward, hard to modify, and convenient to transport.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG testing, additional panels, or tests above 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, comparable body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas all other hair types (such as facial or axillary) are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

The sequence of stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample being accepted into a laboratory system, verifying proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and finalizing additional data entry tasks that may not have been covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for the presence of abused substances. While it is an economical approach to disregard drug use in most cases, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal acceptance. Samples that yield a preliminary positive in Screening must undergo follow-up Confirmation.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than those found in other testing techniques (such as urine or salivary analysis), which makes the hair drug screening process particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing before Confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing detects more recent use.
  • High integrity: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an overview of drug consumption patterns over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs may not be traceable in hair until 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuation: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair development can influence metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
