In Roe Park, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing. Our centers across all U.S. cities are equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained traction over recent years as a preferred drug testing method. More employers, legal authorities, and addiction experts are turning to hair drug tests instead of the usual urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, the judiciary, and those on probation. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, making them hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended record by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for initial and confirmatory tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent sample of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial step of integrating the sample into the laboratory’s system. This process verifies that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for dismissing drug usage across most specimens, a positive screen needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screenings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests have a detection period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: With high resistance to tampering, hair drug tests offer more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: These tests can reveal a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally more cost-intensive than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The benefits of hair follicle testing surpass those of traditional urine tests in Roe Park, NY. Compared to urine tests, hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy and reliability. Owing to their ability to detect a wider drug history window, hair tests serve as a more effective tool for employers. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
