Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Port Jefferson Station, New York. If you need a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers located in every city nationwide. You must have at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body in most scenarios. Hair can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly embraced hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are choosing hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are essential for employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and probation requirements. A significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period for drug usage, generally extending up to 90 days, and the collection process is difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair samples can detect alcohol and drugs for up to approximately 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test result in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into a lab system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminating drug use in most samples, court-admissible positive results must be confirmed. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, further hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive from the screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, opposed to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, contributing to more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Port Jefferson Station, NY, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing by offering superior detection and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests provide an extensive detection window, uncovering drug use over a prolonged period. Additionally, hair tests are much harder to manipulate, ensuring that results remain trustworthy and accurate. This makes hair testing a preferred choice for comprehensive substance use assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Port Jefferson Station, NY, benefit significantly from hair follicle testing due to its extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days. This method offers insights into an applicant or employee's drug history, providing a clear overview of any substance use. Hair tests deliver a broader timeline for detection, allowing employers to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Port Jefferson Station, NY, offers a virtually tamper-resistant assessment method. This reduces the possibility of adulterated samples, ensuring results are both reliable and indisputable. The robust nature of hair testing makes it an invaluable tool for employers and authorities aiming to maintain integrity in their drug testing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
