In Plattsburgh, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our centers are available across every major city. Typically, hair from the head or body that's 1.5 to 2 inches long is adequate for testing. This method can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specifications.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred drug-testing technique. A host of employers, legal bodies, and substance misuse specialists now choose this over conventional urine exams. This test suits environments with zero-tolerance drug policies and is ideal for probationary observations. With a longer detection window—up to 90 days—its sample collection process is secure and nearly foolproof. Despite its broad detection capability, urine tests are still best for substance use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair can chronicle a lengthy history of substance use. When cut near the scalp, it offers roughly a 3-month detection span for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and hassle-free to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, deemed the perfect sample for both screening and validation. For tests such as EtG, supplemental, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t viable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, which includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is assumed positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are derived from hair at a significantly lower concentration than found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive Screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of all presumptive positive samples occurs before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which offer a narrower window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The challenge in circumventing a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It portrays a timeline of drug use over a defined period, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Influences such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
