Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Montgomery, New York. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in this area and have centers nationwide for your convenience. It's essential to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the top of your head or body, as this can be utilized for tests. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other custom tests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair drug tests over typical urine tests. These tests are favored by entities with stringent anti-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationers. This method's significant advantage is its extended drug detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, involving a supervised collection process that's nearly foolproof. However, to detect drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests are still preferred for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol consumption over an approximate three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield the 100mg of hair needed for optimal screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, a specimen of 150mg is preferable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, the equivalent amount of body hair is an acceptable alternative. When addressing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a laboratory encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample's initial entry into the laboratory's system. This consists of checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary check for substance abuse. Though Screening serves as a cost-efficient strategy to negate drug usage for most samples, positive results need confirmation for court admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent verification.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are extracted at a notably lower concentration in hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation if required. The whole processing sequence—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace substances up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays usage history: It reveals consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect imminent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
