Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hamburg, New York. Should you require drug or alcohol hair tests, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area, with facilities in cities across the nation, ready to conduct hair assessments. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body can be utilized. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in recent times for substance assessments. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now favor hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Companies enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on supervision prefer this method. The key advantage is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, with collection under supervision, making deceit nearly impossible. However, for recent usage within 5 days, urine remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug presence by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. With sampling near the scalp, hair provides nearly a 3-month window for detecting substances like alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for preliminary and confirmatory screening. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't present, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair denotes scalp hair solely, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for abuse drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If results are presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug screening being the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage over 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection scope.
  • Manipulation resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, increasing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical data: It supplies a usage pattern over time instead of identifying only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs in hair require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color distinctions and individual hair growth variations might influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Referred to often as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
