Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Farmingdale, NY. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers nationwide, including all cities, can conduct hair tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for evaluation. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to suit specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence over traditional methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests instead of urine tests. This method is favored by firms with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers due to its extended detection window—up to 90 days—and secure collection process, minimizing the chance of deceit. Still, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Utilizing hair testing is acknowledged as an effective method to identify alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a history of substance use over an extended period by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can demonstrate drug and alcohol consumption for up to around 90 days. Its collection is straightforward, it poses challenges in terms of adulteration, and it is easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, constituting the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to determine the weight. In the absence of scalp hair, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it indicates only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results is comprised of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not included within an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although this approach is budget-friendly for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive screen needs confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that preliminarily appear positive during Screening necessitate secondary validation.

In cases of presumed positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction process. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at a comparatively lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which adds to hair drug screening's complexity.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods handle the confirmation of any positive screening results. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, if needed. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is overseen in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days previously, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers past usage insights: Projects a pattern of drug use over a span of time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection is lacking: Drug detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally pricier than other types of drug tests.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
