In Eastport, New York, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it's a drug or alcohol test you require, our expertise in hair testing is available at numerous testing facilities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for detecting drug use in recent years. Many employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts advocate for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. A major advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation and hard to tamper with. For recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow, hair reflects an extended history of drug use. If taken near the scalp, it can indicate drug or alcohol use over the past three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or panels above 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for measurement. If scalp hair is scarce, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When we discuss head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.)

Process Overview

The procedure for processing drug test samples consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase, introducing a sample into the lab’s system. This comprises checking that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair from the specimen is utilized for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug analysis more challenging.

Positive screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is quite difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological insight: It provides a record of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Variability in findings: Elements like hair color and individual growth variability can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Eastport, NY, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine analyses. The enhanced detection accuracy and reliability of hair tests provide significant benefits. Unlike urine tests, hair testing can trace drug use over longer periods, offering a more comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing in Eastport, NY, is its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, hair tests can reveal substance use over a period of up to 90 days, allowing employers to gain deeper insight into an individual's drug history. This presents a more thorough evaluation compared to shorter detection spans of other test types.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
