Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Hampton, New York. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing spans all cities nationwide, thanks to our extensive network of testing centers. For most cases, a hair sample between 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is adequate. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG as well as other customizable options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in conducting drug screenings. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are crucial for zero-tolerance workplace policies, legal proceedings, and probation cases. One major advantage is the extended drug detection timeframe, lasting up to 90 days, with direct sample collection, ensuring nearly foolproof integrity. Yet, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and panels above 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' refers solely to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug test results comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into a lab’s database, confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional information not included digitally.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for detecting drug use. Although Screening helps to economically eliminate drug usage in most samples, court-admissible results require a confirmed positive screen. Any samples initially testing positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than those in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest method to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo necessary washing ahead of confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation aligned with ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests track substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: It's exceptionally hard to falsify a hair drug test, yielding more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical patterns: It reveals drug use trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates might influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often named "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outmatches urine tests in East Hampton, NY, due to its superior detection period and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter window, hair tests capture a broader scope of substance use history.

This advantage makes hair follicle tests the preferred choice for employers requiring comprehensive drug use evaluation. It provides a robust alternative to standard urine testing, mitigating the risk of false negatives.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing makes it a crucial option for employers in East Hampton, NY. Unlike urine tests, hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a well-rounded view of an individual's substance history.

This extensive detection period allows employers to assess long-term patterns in substance use, enabling informed decisions. It ensures a thorough understanding of the employee's or applicant's historical substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
