Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Cooperstown, New York. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair testing. We have locations nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, either from the head or body. Custom hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other purposes.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common methodology for drug detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair tests serve organizations with strict no-drug policies, judiciary requirements, and probationary procedures. The advantage lies in its extended drug detection window—up to 90 days. However, urine tests remain more reliable for recent usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a comprehensive historical record for alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer a drug and alcohol detection window of up to approximately 90 days. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a proportionate amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes other types (such as facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four major phases involved in processing a drug test sample in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of logging a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. It offers a cost-effective means to rule out drug usage in most cases. However, a positive screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation during Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), attributing to the complexity of hair drug testing methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire process is overseen according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Cheating deterrent: Hair drug tests are tough to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Can reveal patterns of drug use over an extended period instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection lag: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur greater expenses compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
