Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Carmel, New York. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, we specialize in hair testing and have centers across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, whether from the scalp or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent as a method for detecting substance use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer it over standard urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for those maintaining a zero-tolerance stance on drug use. They provide an extended detection window of up to 90 days, with the process being observed, thus minimizing the chance of cheating. Yet, urine tests remain the best for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for sample weighing is advisable. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an acceptable alternative. When mentioning head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into the laboratory process. This step includes ensuring the sample's integrity in terms of sealing and shipping, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial minimal-cost assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates drug usage in most samples, confirmation is required for court admissibility when a screen is positive. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further validation.

In instances of presumptive positivity at the Screening step, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations in comparison to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the high complexity of hair drug screening methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive outcomes from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive specimens undergo cleaning before final confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug utilization for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Testing integrity: The resilience against manipulation with hair drug testing ensures more reliable results.
  • Pattern identification: This method allows for observation of drug use trends over an extended duration, rather than just recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: It typically requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Outcome variability: Variations such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand as opposed to the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
