Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Bath, New York. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available across all cities nationwide for conducting these tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown is necessary, though body hair is often acceptable. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for conducting drug assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are favored by entities with stringent anti-drug policies, courts, and those supervising probation. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, and it is collected through an observed method, making it hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers within the developing strand, offering an extensive historical record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can detect drug and alcohol use within roughly a 3-month timeframe. Collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system, involving the verification that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it’s a cost-effective strategy for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples identified in the Screening stage do require subsequent confirmation.

In instances of presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is prepped for Extraction. This phase involves drug extraction from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples indicated as presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Low likelihood of evasion: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insights: Enables identification of drug utilization patterns over time, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: A period of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
