Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alden, New York. If a hair or alcohol drug test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with testing centers across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation commonly use hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected in an observed process, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended term record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month history of drug and alcohol presence. Collection of hair is straightforward, it is quite resistant to tampering, and is easily transportable.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hairs (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for initial and confirmatory testing. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, and/or more than 10 panels, it is suggested to have 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. In cases where scalp hair is not an option, equivalent body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory analysis of drug test samples include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial entry into the lab system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipping were adequate, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data entry needed outside of electronic chain of custody methods.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. While Screening economically rules out drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples that test preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original batch for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations lower than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a complex process.

Positive Screening outcomes are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire system from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: Hair testing can demonstrate drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs generally take 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative testing styles.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often used is somewhat incorrect, as the evaluation targets the hair strand rather than the sub-scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
